Quilting for a Cure

The quilts in this photo gallery increase awareness about some type of cancer. Some were auctioned, with money donated to cancer research. All are inspirational.

Big Quilt Block Pattern: Weeping Willow

Saturday October 11, 2008
sampler quilt patternI love the Art Deco-ish look of this version of the Weeping Willow, a vintage quilt block pattern that's attributed to a few different publications from the 1930's. The Weeping Willow is a big block that finishes at 30-inches square. Use the block as-is or add a border or two to make it a slightly larger wallhanging. You might also make a table throw from the block or put the tree at the center of a medallion quilt.

Cancer Ribbon Quilt Block

Wednesday October 8, 2008
breast cancer quilt patternThis Cancer Awareness Ribbon quilt block is foundation pieced. It isn't difficult, but it does contain some long triangles and they can be a little tricky to align the first couple of times. So don't worry if your first triangle isn't quite right -- you'll get it down-pat quickly (and it doesn't hurt that patch sizes are large enough to make placement fairly flexible). I'm still working on a couple of other versions, one patchwork and one appliqué -- watch for those soon.

Lady in Red Quilt Block Pattern

Tuesday October 7, 2008
quilt block patternIf Lady in Red looks familiar, you probably recognize the underlying design. I took some liberties with the traditional Lady of the Lake quilt block pattern, replacing two of the block's half-square triangles with squares and using three colors instead of the normal two. This variation probably has a name -- there's nothing truly new under the sun, but Lady in Red works just fine. The block finishes at 9" square and the instructions are for sixteen blocks. I've included an example of one layout, but flip the blocks around and you'll find lots of other possibilities.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Lots of you have asked for breast cancer ribbon patterns. I haven't forgotten about that and do have a pattern that's just about ready to publish. I apologize for being so late with it. I managed to crack a bone on the side of my foot last week, which you'd think would mean I could sit at the computer longer to finish things up. But instead, I took some days off. I'll try to have that pattern to you by tonight (Tuesday) -- fingers crossed.

Pinwheel Quilt Block Patterns

Saturday October 4, 2008
pinwheel quilt block patternPinwheels are among the most popular patchwork quilt blocks, so you'll find several pinwheel patterns on this Web site. The Pinwheel in a Square illustrated here is one of my favorites, and when you look at the pattern you'll find instructions for two sizes, an 8" block and a 12" block. The Mosaic Pinwheel is another fun design, and one you can make by itself or combine with Pinwheel in a Square to make an entire quilt.
